Background

I was born in Northern Rhodesian (Zambia) in 1946. I have always loved drawing. Art was on the curriculum at junior and senior school, and these were the happiest times for me. Sadly, art was never treated seriously at secondary school. At university the nearest I came to studying art was taking a course of History of Art and Architecture.

While doing a post-graduate course in film making in London, I attended Life Drawing classes at St Martins College of Art. It was then that I developed a love of drawing the human body. Working in Johannesburg I attended night classes in figure drawing at the University of the Witwatersrand. Later on when teaching in Italy I attended a privately run Art Academy and was introduced to pastels. Pastels suited my style of work. For me it combined drawing, which I was good at, and painting.
I never really started painting seriously until 1997 although I had kept up my drawing wherever I happened to be. Most of my drawings were of domestic animals. I became very competent at drawing animals but my main ambition was to draw and paint nudes.

I suppose most of my instruction in painting and drawing has come from books. Through my life I have collected instructional books on painting and drawing and I still refer to these. Artists that I admire are Degas, Monet, Turner, Picasso, Rockwell, Hockney and James Wyeth.

I have been a keen photographer all my life and have studied and practised film-making and video production. Photographs and video provide a lot of my subject matter.
