Ophelia (oil) |
Ophelia was a popular subject for Pre Raphealite painters. Ophelia committed suicide by drowning when her love affair with Hamlet went badly wrong. Before drowning herself she pulled the petals off a bunch of flowers. These are floating in the water. Her body is distorted because it is being viewed through the water. She is naked signifying that she had cast off all earthly cares. She is wearing a gold necklace to denote her status. Her face is distorted because of her tortured mental state. |
